Italian designer Giorgio Armani has died at the age of 91, his fashion house confirmed in a statement to the Associated Press on Thursday (September 4).

Armani was reported to have died “peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones" at his home, the statement reads. “Indefatigable to the end, he worked until his final days, dedicating himself to the company, the collections and the many ongoing and future projects."

Armani, who became one of fashion's most recognizable names through the concept of understated elegance, missed Milan Fashion Week for the first time in June 2025 during the previews of Spring-Summer 2026 menswear due to an undisclosed illness. The designer was planning a 50-year anniversary event celebrating his signature Giorgio Armani fashion house set to take place during Milan Fashion Week this month.

A public viewing will be held in the Armani Theater showcasing his ready-to-wear collections on Saturday (September 6) and Sunday (September 7), while a funeral will be held privately, though details have not been publicly released. Condolences and tributes were shared by political leaders and fashion designers following news of Armani's death.

“The world lost a giant today. He made history and will be remembered forever,’' said Donatella Versace, whose late brother, Gianni, served as a stylistic rival to Armani in the 1990s.

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni, who commonly wore Armani's business attire, credited him for his "elegance, sobriety and creativity," calling him "a symbol of the best Italy."
